Design and contruction of an axial flow solenoid hydroturbine model
Axial flow turbines are best suited for the exploitation of low head hydraulic potential. Such a model turbine was designed, constructed and tested by the Laboratory of Hydraulic Turbomachines, NTUA. After the completion of the design of the meridional (hydraulic) profile of the turbine, a numerical code was applied for the numerical solution of the meridional flow. The results of the numerical solution were used for the design of the runner blades according to the one-dimensional flow method. The model is equiped with adjustable runner blades and wicked gates for optimum annual output. The gained efficiency was 87%. Some results of the project are shown in the following figures:
