Note : Currently Constantinople or "Constantinoupolis" in Greek, is called "Istanbul" in Turkey. However the etymology of the name is very interesting : When Constantinople fell on 29 May 1453 to the Ottoman Turks, Greek Inhabitants used to call the capital of the Byzantine Empire as "Polis", the second half of "Constantinoupolis", which means "Polis" (City) of Constantine the Great. Therefore, when Greeks wanted to say that they go to Constantinople, said : we go to the city and in Greek : "Is tin Polin" !
Simple comparison of the word ISTANBUL and "IS TIN POLIN" proves that "Istanbul" still means Constantinople the way the Greeks used to say it 500 years ago.
